Autumn Illumination and Night Viewing at To-ji
To-ji Temple, Kondo and Kodo Halls · MinamiOpen in Google Maps ↗
From 31 October to 13 December 2026, To-ji opens its grounds, Kondo and Kodo halls at night for autumn illumination, 18:00–21:30 (last admission 21:00), open daily throughout. Night admission: adults ¥1,000, junior high school students and younger ¥500. A World Heritage–level option for off-peak autumn night viewing.
Before you go
The illuminated grounds plus the Kondo and Kodo halls open at night. The north face of the Kodo's altar platform — normally closed — opens specially, so you can walk around it and view the three-dimensional mandala of Buddhist statues from 360 degrees. Autumn leaves, light and esoteric Buddhist imagery together make this night visit unique to To-ji.
To-ji (Kyoogokokuji) is the head temple of the Shingon sect and a World Heritage site dating back to the Heian-kyo era. Its official autumn page notes that the season you walk through the grounds connects to 1,200 years ago — and this illumination takes place within that same span of time.
