From November 17 to December 6, 2026, Chion-in — head temple of the Jodo (Pure Land) sect — lights up its grounds nightly from 17:30 to 21:30 (last entry 21:00). The National Treasure Sanmon gate and Mieido hall, plus the maples of the Yuzen-en garden, are illuminated. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Otetsugi movement, which organizes the illumination, and the Sanmon's upper corridor — normally closed to the public — opens specially.

Before you go

Chion-in is one of Kyoto's grandest temples, the head temple of Pure Land Buddhism, founded on the site where the priest Honen taught and died. Its autumn light-up bathes two National Treasure buildings and a celebrated maple garden in light. What sets it apart from a standard illumination is the programming around it: monks give short talks in the main hall, and a monk-led evening tour takes you through areas usually off-limits.

The temple stands where Honen (1133–1212), founder of the Jodo sect, spread the teaching of chanting Amida Buddha's name and where he died; its formal name is Kachozan Chion-kyoin Otani-dera. In the Edo period the Tokugawa shoguns — themselves Jodo followers — made it their family temple in Kyoto, and the current vast complex dates from that expansion: the Sanmon gate was built in 1621 under Hidetada, the Mieido rebuilt in 1639 under Iemitsu. • The Sanmon gate lit up — and the rare chance to enter its upper corridor
  • Mieido hall, rebuilt in 1639, glowing against the night
  • The maples of Yuzen-en garden around its pond
  • The evening program in Mieido: the monk's talk and mokugyo chanting experience (18:00 / 18:45 / 19:30 / 20:15), plus gagaku court music on November 28 (18:00 and 19:00)
Getting there
Chion-in, 400 Hayashishita-cho, Higashiyama-ku. City bus to 'Chion-in-mae' (route 206 from Kyoto Station), about 5 minutes on foot; or the Tozai subway line to Higashiyama station, about 8 minutes on foot; Keihan Gion-shijo station about 10 minutes.
Booking
The official page does not publish a general nighttime admission fee. The monk-led 'Tsukikage Premium Tour' (Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, 18:00, 90 minutes, max 30 people) costs ¥3,000 (¥1,500 for schoolchildren, cash only, admission included) and must be reserved via the online form by 16:00 on the day. The monk talks need no reservation.
Crowds
A flagship illumination at a major temple in peak autumn — expect crowds, especially on weekends. The premium tour is capped at 30 people.
Good for
First-time visitors, photographers, couples, anyone interested in Buddhism beyond sightseeing. The monk talks explicitly welcome complete beginners.
How it differs
Kyoto has dozens of autumn light-ups; Chion-in's case for your evening rests on three things. Scale: the Sanmon is among Japan's largest wooden gates (24 meters high, 50 wide) — few illuminations give you architecture at this size. Access: the Sanmon's upper corridor is normally closed and opens only for this 60th-anniversary edition. People: the monk talks, the mokugyo chanting experience, and the monk-led premium tour mean you meet the temple, not just photograph it. If you want a smaller garden-centered stroll, Kodai-ji (Oct 23–Dec 13) is more intimate; if you want the pagoda reflected in a pond, To-ji (Oct 31–Dec 13) is the pick. Choose Chion-in for monumental architecture plus human contact.
