The Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art's autumn collection-room feature, 'Museum Story: The Birth of the Municipal Museum,' runs 9 October–13 December 2026 in the North Corridor 1F of the Main Building. It looks back at the history around the 1933 opening of the museum as the Tairei Memorial Kyoto Museum — one of Japan's earliest public art museums — and at works and documents collected in its founding years.

Before you go

The Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art opened in 1933 (Showa 8) as the Tairei Memorial Kyoto Museum, one of Japan's earliest public art museums. Its founding drew effort and funding from Kyoto's business, political and academic circles and many citizens, producing a palace of art on an unprecedented scale; leading figures including Takeuchi Seiho, Kikuchi Keigetsu, Kanokogi Takeshiro and the fifth-generation Shimizu Rokubei served as councillors debating what the museum should be. This feature focuses on the museum's starting point, reviewing its founding history and early collection through works and documents.

The year after opening, the museum staged the large-scale 'Tairei Memorial Kyoto Museum Exhibition,' which crossed factional lines to bring groups from across Japan together — a landmark show. After it closed, the organisers and the museum purchased outstanding exhibits; those founding-era acquisitions became the start of the museum's collection. Today the collection centres on Kyoto art from the modern period onward (Japanese and Western painting, sculpture, prints, crafts, calligraphy), numbering about 4,400 works.

  • Photographs of the Tairei Memorial Kyoto Museum at its 1933 completion and other founding documents
  • Early acquisitions purchased after the founding-year exhibition
  • Collection works such as Tokuoka Shinsen's 'Wheat' (1934)
  • Kyoto's modern art seen through the lens of the museum's founding

Good for
Anyone interested in museum history, modern Kyoto art, or Japan's public-museum system; anyone wanting a systematic look at the collection.
How it differs
Unlike ticketed special exhibitions, the collection room follows the museum's fixed collection-admission scheme. Unlike an artist retrospective such as the Yamaga Seika show, what you see here is not one artist's work but the history of how the museum itself was born. The winter feature, 'Toki o nuru: Kyoto lacquer and modernity' (15 January–14 March 2027), follows.
Questions
Is it a ticketed show?

Yes. Collection-room rates apply: adults ¥520 (city residents) / ¥730 (non-residents); school students free / ¥300; below elementary-school age free.

What is on view?

The museum's own history: the run-up to its 1933 opening as the Tairei Memorial Kyoto Museum, and works and documents collected in its founding years.

How does it differ from a special exhibition?

Special exhibitions are programmed shows; the collection room presents the museum's own holdings of about 4,400 works, with the feature theme changing each season.
