Before you go
Higashi Honganji is the head temple of Shinshu Otani-ha; Shosei-en (Kikakutei) is its detached precinct, once the retirement residence of successive abbots and a garden for receiving guests. NAKED, INC. fills both sites with nighttime light art, paired with drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) themed to the scenery — made for a slow autumn-evening stroll.
Organised by the NAKED GARDEN NIGHTS Higashi Honganji / Shosei-en production committee, co-hosted by Kyoto City with special cooperation from Shinshu Otani-ha (Higashi Honganji); planned, directed and produced by creative company NAKED, INC. The concept is 'night garden plus drink pairing': walk the temple grounds, then Shosei-en, with a drink matched to each scene.
- Goeido LIGHT IN BLOOM: layers of small lights forming a lotus-lit scene
- [EX only] Goeido gate tower-top CELESTIAL GAZE: views over the Amida and Goeido halls and Kyoto at night, plus the celestial figures painted on the ceiling (requires the EX limited ticket)
- Shosei-en Ingetsu Pond GARDEN OF THE MOON: a giant moon rising over the water with shifting autumn reflections
- Shosei-en Shinsetsu Bridge and Tanpukei: lotus lights on the water linking the historic garden with the Kyoto cityscape beyond
- Getting there
- Within walking distance of JR Kyoto Station (a local media report says about 7 minutes). Address: Karasuma-dori Shichijo-agaru, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto 600-8505.
- Booking
- Tickets required. Early-bird tickets sold 1 Sep–30 Oct (Mon–Thu ¥1,900 / ¥1,300; Fri–Sun and holidays ¥2,100 / ¥1,500). Standard: Mon–Thu ¥2,100 / ¥1,500, Fri–Sun and holidays ¥2,300 / ¥1,700; preschoolers free. The Goeido gate tower-top viewing is sold only with the EX travel-booking limited ticket. Entry may be capped when crowded — arrive early.
- Crowds
- Last entry at Higashi Honganji is 21:00, but reception can close early if queues are long — even ticket holders may be turned away, so arrive before 19:00.
- Good for
- Anyone wanting a Kyoto night out in foliage season or who enjoys light art; no Japanese needed, it's all visual. Preschoolers go free, but the garden is dark at night — watch your step. On 6–8 and 25 November only Shosei-en opens; check the site before planning.
- How it differs
- Unlike ordinary temple illuminations, this spans two sites, runs every night, and is built as a full 'drink + night garden' route. Compared with NAKED's similar events at places like Nijo Castle, the draw here is the lotus-light installation at the Goeido hall and the giant moon reflected on Shosei-en's Ingetsu Pond. The tower-top viewing above the Goeido gate admits only EX travel-booking limited-ticket holders, not standard tickets.
Do I need a reservation?
No reservation needed — buy a ticket for your date and walk in. But the Goeido gate tower-top viewing is only for EX travel-booking limited-ticket holders; standard tickets don't cover it.
Does it run in the rain?
Yes, it runs rain or shine; only severe weather can cancel it.
What's different on 6–8 and 25 November?
Only Shosei-en is open on those four days (not the Higashi Honganji grounds), with separate pricing — check the official site before buying.
