From October 24 to December 29, 2026 (no service December 16), the Sagano Romantic Train lights up its line daily from 16:30 until the last train, with extra scheduled trains Nos. 81/82 and 91/92 added during the period. The current cars retire on December 29 and new cars debut next spring, making this the last year to ride the current stock for the Train of Light Illusions. Tickets go on sale on the official website from 00:00 one month before the ride date; station counters do not sell advance tickets.

Before you go

This is the autumn foliage season's nighttime version of the Sagano Romantic Train: the same Saga–Kameoka line, but from 16:30 the illuminations along the tracks come on, and outside the window are lit-up autumn leaves and mountains. Daytime runs show the foliage itself; the night runs show it under lights — one line, two experiences. It suits visitors who want to take in Arashiyama's night scenery in one ride without hopping between fixed nighttime temple openings.

The Train of Light Illusions is the trackside light-up and illumination event the Sagano Scenic Railway runs every foliage season, continuing this year under the same theme. The timing matters: the current cars retire on December 29, 2026 and new cars debut next spring, and the operator states plainly that this is the last year to enjoy the illuminations aboard the current rolling stock. Extra scheduled trains were added to carry more passengers during the period.

  • Last year of the current cars: retiring December 29, with new cars debuting next spring
  • Trackside illuminations daily 16:30 until the last train (no service December 16)
  • Extra scheduled trains: No. 81 (Saga 17:10 → Kameoka 17:38) and No. 82 (Kameoka 17:43 → Saga 18:12), running Oct 24–Dec 13 and Dec 26–27; Nos. 91/92 added Nov 14–30 and Dec 5–6
  • Online sales open at 00:00 one month before the ride date; no advance sales at station counters
Getting there
The ride runs between Torokko Saga Station and Torokko Kameoka Station (Saga-Tenryuji area, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto). Torokko Saga Station is next to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, reachable on foot. If you ride one-way only, check your return transport from the Kameoka side in advance — night services arrive after dark.
Booking
Tickets go on sale on the operator's official website from 00:00 one month before the ride date; station counters do not sell advance tickets. Same-day tickets are sold at each station counter (except Torokko Hozukyo), but you may not be able to board if the train is full. Check fares on the official site (media sources cite 880 yen one-way for adults and 440 yen for children, but the official fare page could not be verified this time).
Crowds
Night runs in foliage season are popular, and the operator added extra scheduled trains for this period. Weekends and peak foliage days sell out easily, so buy as early as the one-month-ahead 00:00 release; weekdays are relatively calmer.
Good for
People who want to see nighttime illuminations in foliage season; rail fans (last year of the current cars); those who prefer viewing from a seat over walking night streets.
How it differs
Compared with nighttime temple openings, the train is sightseeing in motion: no queuing at temple gates and no walking dark streets — you watch the lit line from your seat. Compared with the daytime trains, the only difference is time and light: after 16:30 the trackside is illuminated, showing lit foliage and mountains.
