From 20 September to 25 November 2026, To-ji's Treasure Hall hosts the autumn special exhibition "Art and History of the Five-storied Pagoda: 1,200 Years of Rise and Fall," gathering crafts and historical documents connected with the pagoda, including newly restored dragon heads. Open 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30); adults ¥600, junior high and below ¥300. The run is split into two phases (20 Sep–22 Oct, 23 Oct–25 Nov) with some exhibits changed.

Before you go

This isn't a general temple-treasure show but a focused exhibition on the five-storied pagoda itself: Buddhist statues, crafts, old documents and repair records connected with Japan's tallest wooden pagoda. To-ji is the head temple of Shingon Buddhism with vast holdings; bringing the pagoda-related pieces together traces 1,200 years of this tower's fortunes. At ¥600, it's among the cheapest museum-grade exhibitions in Kyoto.

In 823, Emperor Saga granted To-ji to Kukai (Kobo Daishi), making it the founding center of Shingon esoteric Buddhism; it became a World Heritage site in 1994. The five-storied pagoda stands 55 meters tall — the tallest wooden structure in Japan and a Kyoto landmark. Timed with the completion of conservation work on pagoda ornaments, the exhibition presents newly restored dragon heads alongside crafts and documents, telling the story of the tower's construction, fires and rebuildings since the Heian period.

  • Newly restored dragon heads from the pagoda roof on public view for the first time — ornaments you normally can't see up close
  • Old documents recording the pagoda's construction history across the centuries
  • Some exhibits change between the two phases, so visiting before and after 23 October shows different things
  • Free public lectures on 17 and 25 October (50 seats each) and a free guided temple walk on 25 October (30 seats) — apply in advance by phone or postcard
Getting there
City bus to Toji-higashimon-mae, 2 minutes on foot; Kintetsu Toji Station, 10 minutes on foot; about 15 minutes on foot from the Hachijo exit of JR Kyoto Station. The Treasure Hall is inside the To-ji precinct.
Booking
No reservation needed; buy at the door: adults ¥600, junior high and below ¥300. The related lectures and walks are free but require advance application by phone or postcard (also accepted at the Treasure Hall ticket counter).
Crowds
The Treasure Hall is not a major tourist draw — quiet on weekdays, mostly local visitors on weekends. No queues to worry about.
Good for
For anyone interested in Buddhist art or Japanese architectural history, and for visitors who've seen the pagoda's exterior and want to go deeper. Labels are mainly in Japanese, so read up on the pagoda's background first if you don't read Japanese.
How it differs
Don't confuse To-ji's three autumn programs: the Treasure Hall show is about objects (art and documents, daytime, ¥600); the pagoda first-floor opening is about entering the tower's interior space; the night illumination is about the evening view and the mandala hall. If you're into Buddhist art and history, the Treasure Hall has the most substance; if you want the tower itself, go for the first-floor opening; if you only have the evening, go for the illumination. Compared with big special exhibitions at the Kyoto National Museum (¥2,000+), this is ¥600, smaller in scale but tightly themed — 30 minutes to an hour is enough.
Questions
Do I need a reservation?

No for the exhibition itself — buy tickets at the door. Only the related lectures and guided walks need advance application by phone or postcard.

Are there English or Chinese explanations?

Labels are mainly in Japanese. The hall is small enough to enjoy the objects themselves, but some background reading helps if you don't read Japanese.

Can I take photos?

Photography is generally prohibited in temple treasure exhibitions; follow the notices inside.

How is this different from the pagoda first-floor opening?

The Treasure Hall shows art and documents about the pagoda (daytime, ¥600); the first-floor opening lets you enter the pagoda interior (31 Oct–13 Dec). Separate tickets.
