Toji Night Illumination

From 31 October to 13 December 2026, World Heritage To-ji holds its autumn night opening, 18:00–21:30 (last entry 21:00); adults ¥1,000, junior high and below ¥500. The five-storied pagoda and some 200 maples are reflected in Hyotan Pond, and the Kondo and Kodo halls open at night for close-up viewing of the three-dimensional mandala — with the altar's north side specially opened for a full 360-degree circuit.
Before you go
To-ji's annual autumn illumination: the 55-meter pagoda and around 200 maples lit up and mirrored in Hyotan Pond — one of Kyoto's classic night views. The Kondo (National Treasure) and Kodo (Important Cultural Property) halls, open in daytime too, feel completely different at night — the three-dimensional mandala in the Kodo under lights is a different experience from the daytime visit.
In 823, Emperor Saga granted To-ji to Kukai, making it the founding center of Shingon esoteric Buddhism; it became a World Heritage site in 1994. The three-dimensional mandala in the lecture hall is Kukai's arrangement of Buddhist statues in three dimensions — an abstract mandala you can walk into. The night opening specially reveals the altar's north side, letting visitors circle the altar a full 360 degrees — not possible in daytime.
- The Hyotan Pond reflection: pagoda and maples mirrored on the water — walk around the pond, every angle is different; this is To-ji's signature night view
- The 3D mandala at night: 21 statues in lamplight, with the altar's north side specially opened for a 360-degree circuit
- The Kondo at night: the National Treasure hall looks completely different under lights
- Some 200 lit maples: red leaves, lights and the pagoda silhouette in one frame
- Getting there
- 10 minutes on foot from Kintetsu Toji Station; about 15 minutes from the Hachijo exit of JR Kyoto Station; city bus to Toji-higashimon-mae, 2 minutes on foot. Close to Kyoto Station, convenient for getting back to your hotel at night.
- Booking
- No reservation needed; tickets at the door: adults ¥1,000, junior high and below ¥500. Daytime and nighttime are separately ticketed — one ticket doesn't cover both.
- Crowds
- Weekend evenings in maple season get busy. No entry 17:00–17:30 for the day-night changeover; just come after 18:00. Weekday evenings are more relaxed.
- Good for
- For couples, photographers, and first-time Kyoto visitors (landmark plus night view in one). Fine with children too — the grounds are flat and easy to walk.
- How it differs
- Kyoto has dozens of autumn illuminations; four reasons to pick To-ji: first, the pagoda's reflection on the water is one of the signature views of To-ji at night; second, the night opening of the Kodo with its 3D mandala combines building interior and night view in one; third, it's close to Kyoto Station (10 min from Kintetsu Toji, 15 min from JR Hachijo), easy to get back to your hotel at night; fourth, ¥1,000 is reasonable. Compared with Kiyomizu or Kodai-ji illuminations, To-ji is less crowded with open grounds; compared with NAKED projection mapping at Nijo Castle, To-ji is traditional lighting on historic architecture — quieter. Note daytime and nighttime are separately ticketed with no continuous entry; no admission 17:00–17:30.
Do I need a reservation?
No — buy at the door. Adults ¥1,000, junior high and below ¥500.
Is it open in the rain?
Open throughout the run with no holidays. Check the official site in severe weather.
Can I take photos?
Photography in the precinct is generally fine, but check on-site notices for the Kondo and Kodo interiors; same for tripods.
Can I visit without speaking Japanese?
Yes. It's mostly about the views, so the language barrier is minimal.
How is it different from a daytime visit?
Completely different at night: the illuminated pagoda reflection and the night-only Kodo mandala with its 360-degree altar circuit. Note day and night need separate tickets.
