Before you go

A sub-temple of Daitoku-ji, founded in 1509 by Kogaku Soko Zenji. The Hojo (main hall) is a National Treasure and the dry landscape garden (Daisen-in Shoin Garden) is a Special Place of Scenic Beauty. Screen paintings are by Muromachi-period masters Soami, Kano Motonobu and Kano Yukinobu. The temple also offers regular zazen (seated meditation) sessions by reservation.

Founded in 1509 (Eisho 6) by Kogaku Soko Zenji, the 76th abbot of Daitoku-ji, as one of its sub-temples. The temple's own history notes it as a place Sen no Rikyu frequented in his lifetime, and its Muromachi-period buildings, garden and screen paintings survive to this day.

  • National Treasure Hojo hall and Special-Place-of-Scenic-Beauty dry landscape garden
  • Screen paintings by Muromachi masters Soami, Kano Motonobu and Kano Yukinobu
  • Tea house with ties to Sen no Rikyu (per the temple's own introduction)
  • Regular zazen sessions open to the public (reservation required)
Getting there
54-1 Murasakino Daitokuji-cho, Kita Ward, Kyoto 603-8231. From JR Kyoto Station take city bus 206, express 101 or 205 and get off at 'Daitokuji-mae' (8-min walk); also reachable via subway Karasuma Line Kitaoji Station plus bus.
Booking
Temple visits need no reservation — just come during opening hours. Zazen experiences are held regularly and require booking through the official site's reservation forms.
Crowds
Open all year, but the calendar on the official site shows slightly different hours on some days — check it before visiting. Hours may also change on days with zazen events.
Good for
Karesansui and Zen culture fans, anyone wanting to try zazen, and visitors who prefer small, quiet temples.
How it differs
Compared with the crowded rock garden of Ryoan-ji, Daisen-in is smaller and quieter — better for slow, close looking at a karesansui garden. It sits inside the Daitoku-ji complex in northern Kyoto, so it pairs well with Kinkaku-ji and the Kitaoji area.
