Built in 1895 to mark 1,100 years since the founding of Heian-kyo (Kyoto), Heian Shrine's vivid vermilion halls recreate the Imperial palace style of ancient Kyoto. Its strolling garden is a nationally designated scenic spot, famous for weeping cherry blossoms in spring and irises in early summer. The shrine grounds are free; the garden costs ¥600. The Jidai Matsuri festival departs from here every October 22.
