Jōnangū was founded south of Kyoto when the capital moved to Heian-kyō, and for twelve hundred years it has been revered as a shrine that protects against directional ill luck (hōyoke). In the autumn period B (1 Sep–31 Dec) its garden is open 9:00–16:30 (last entry 16:00), ¥800 for adults (junior high and up) and ¥500 for primary school children. Eating, tripods, monopods, stepladders and selfie sticks are not allowed in the garden, and sketching is not permitted.
