Kitano Tenmangu is the head shrine of the approximately 12,000 Tenmangu and Tenjin shrines across Japan that enshrine Sugawara no Michizane, and the birthplace of Tenjin worship; it is affectionately called 'Kitano no Tenjin-san.' Its grounds are home to the National Treasure main hall, along with the plum garden in spring and the Momiji-en autumn foliage garden built around the historic Odoi earthworks, offering seasonal scenery throughout the year.
