Kyoto University's main campus in the Yoshida district of Sakyo Ward, founded 1897 and famed for its "freedom of academic spirit." The Centennial Clock Tower Memorial Hall (1925) is the landmark; every November the campus hosts the November Festival, one of Kansai's largest university festivals. The campus is open to casual strolling on weekdays — a nice way to soak up a century-old academic atmosphere.
