Japan's oldest surviving theater, licensed by the shogunate around 1610 and the birthplace of kabuki culture in Kyoto. The current 1929 building in Momoyama style is a registered national tangible cultural property (1,082 seats), operated by Shochiku. The year-end "Kichirei Kaomise" grand kabuki is a Kyoto seasonal tradition. Tickets range from a few thousand to over ten thousand yen; Japanese audio-guide earphones are usually available for rent.
