Ordered by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1603 and the site where the last shogun returned power to the Emperor in 1867, Nijo Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Ninomaru Palace holds over a thousand Kano-school screen paintings, and its "nightingale floors" chirp as you walk. Open 8:45–16:00 (castle closes 17:00); closed Dec 29–31. Photography is banned inside the palace.
