Ninnaji Temple, founded in 888, is the head temple of the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism. Also known as the "former Omuro Imperial Villa," it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1994 as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. Its golden hall, a national treasure, was relocated from the Shishinden Hall of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and the temple's Omuro cherry trees are known for their late bloom and low-growing branches.
