京都市左京区大原Open in Google Maps ↗

Ohara is a mountain basin surrounded by mountains at the northwestern foot of Mt. Hiei, once a key relay point on the Saba Kaido (Wakasa Kaido) route connecting Wakasa to Kyoto. The Takano River runs through it, and its rural landscape—with clear streams where fireflies dance and flowers blooming through the seasons—remains intact. Historic temples such as Sanzen-in, Jakko-in, and Hosen-in are scattered throughout, and the area is known for its 'Ohara vegetables.' It is about 30 minutes from central Kyoto.
