In 784 (Enryaku 3), when Emperor Kanmu moved the capital to Nagaoka-kyō, the deities of Nara’s Kasuga Taisha were enshrined here, which is why it is called “Kasuga of Kyoto”; Emperor Montoku had the shrine buildings built in 850. The approach of about 200 m between the first and third torii becomes a tunnel of maples in autumn. The grounds are open to worshippers freely, all year.
