Sanzen-in is a temple located in Ohara, Kyoto, tracing its origin to a hermitage founded on Mount Hiei by Dengyo Daishi Saicho. Its gardens, Yusei-en and Juhoki-en, change colors through the seasons, displaying maple foliage in autumn.
Before you go
Sanzen-in originated during the Enryaku era (782–806) when Dengyo Daishi Saicho built a hermitage under a pear tree on Mount Hiei. The grounds feature the Juhoki-en garden before the Guest Hall and the Yusei-en garden, while Ojo Gokuraku-in's Amida Triad is a designated National Treasure and the hall an Important Cultural Property.
- Yusei-en Garden: A pond stroll garden displaying seasonal colors across wild cherry blossoms, summer greens, autumn maples, and winter snow.
- Juhoki-en Garden: A pond garden by the Guest Hall, traditionally said to be remodeled by Edo-period tea master Kanamori Sowa (1584–1656).
- Ojo Gokuraku-in: Enshrines the National Treasure Amida Triad within an Important Cultural Property wooden hall.
