Formally Kamomioya Shrine, one of Kyoto's oldest shrines and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its twin national-treasure main halls standing side by side are exceptionally rare. The surrounding Tadasu-no-mori forest preserves pre-Heian native vegetation — a national historic site and a lovely woodland walk. The Aoi Matsuri on May 15 is one of Kyoto's three great festivals. Free entry; 10 minutes from Keihan Demachiyanagi Station.
