Tenryū-ji is the head temple of a Rinzai Zen branch, ranked first of Kyoto’s Five Great Zen Temples and a World Heritage site, in Sagano–Arashiyama. The garden is open 8:30–17:00 (last entry 16:50), adult ¥500; the halls and the “Dragon” painting in the Hatto are viewed separately. From 14 to 30 Nov there is a special early-morning garden opening from 7:30.
