From 24 October to 20 December 2026, the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design (Window Gallery) hosts the special exhibition on university museum collections, free of charge. All 16 universities and 17 museums take part, showing 27 selected pieces juxtaposed across archaeology, art, craft and astronomy through the single lens of 'craftsmanship'. The run is split into two phases with some exhibits changed.

Before you go

This is the 15th-anniversary joint exhibition of the Kyoto University Museums Network, active since 2012. University museum collections are normally gathered for research and teaching and rarely seen by the public — this show opens the universities' 'treasure boxes' all at once.

The Kyoto University Museums Network, centered on 14 university museums in the city, has been active since the 2012 academic year; 2026 marks its 15th anniversary. Its joint exhibitions have traveled beyond Kyoto to Fukuoka, Sendai, Naha, Tsukuba and even Taipei. This edition takes 'craftsmanship' (tewaza) as its common theme: from collections spanning different eras and fields, it reads the prayers and wishes people entrusted to handmade things. Note: the official title was updated from 'Daigaku no Takaramono' to 'Daigaku wa Takarabako' in the 15 October 2026 release — use the new title.

  • 27 'treasures' from 16 universities and 17 museums, juxtaposed across disciplines through the lens of craftsmanship
  • Two phases with different exhibits: Part 1 (24 Oct–19 Nov) and Part 2 (20 Nov–20 Dec) — worth a second visit
  • The stamp rally: pick up a stamp card at the venue and win original museum goods
  • Pair it with the permanent exhibition: 74 categories of Kyoto traditional crafts plus daily artisan demonstrations (permanent exhibition charges separately)
Getting there
About a 10-minute walk from Exit 1 of Higashiyama Station on the Tozai subway line; or get off at 'Okazaki Park: Rohm Theatre Kyoto / Miyakomesse' by city bus, right in front. The venue is on B1F of Miyakomesse.
Booking
The special exhibition is free with no reservation. The 29 November anniversary symposium is also free with no reservation (first 40 arrivals); the walking tours of member museums require advance signup via the official website form.
Crowds
A small gallery space; the exhibition itself is free. The symposium (40 places) and walking tours (10–20 places) are very limited — sign up early.
Good for
Good for: visitors interested in universities, museums and craft; deep-travel types curious about Kyoto's 'university city' side; stamp-rally fans.
How it differs
Against an ordinary museum special exhibition: all 16 universities and 17 museums exhibit together — academic collections normally gathered for research and teaching, rarely seen by the public, opened at once. The curation cuts across archaeology, art, craft and astronomy through the single thread of 'craftsmanship', where ordinary special exhibitions usually follow era or school. The linked stamp rally makes the show the starting point of a 'tour the university museums of Kyoto' itinerary. Against the museum's permanent exhibition: the special show is free and tightly themed.
Questions
Do I need a reservation?

No — the special exhibition needs none. The walking tours require advance signup.

How much is it?

The special exhibition is free; the museum's permanent exhibition charges separately (adults ¥500, schoolchildren ¥400).

Do the exhibits change during the run?

Yes — Part 1 (24 Oct–19 Nov) and Part 2 (20 Nov–20 Dec) show different selections.

What is the stamp rally?

The 14th University Museums Network stamp rally (19 Sep–23 Feb 2027): collect stamps at member museums to win original museum goods; stamp cards are free at each venue.
