November 20 to December 6, 2026, Eikando (Zenrin-ji) opens for night viewing every evening 17:30–21:00; admission is ¥1,000 (junior high and up). The still surface of Hojo Pond mirrors the illuminated maples and the Tahoto Pagoda on the hill — one of Kyoto's signature autumn night scenes.

Before you go

Eikando, formally Zenrin-ji, is the head temple of the Seizan branch of Jodo Pure Land Buddhism. Long known by the saying 'autumn leaves mean Eikando,' it is among Kyoto's most famous foliage spots. At night the garden transforms: pond, covered corridors, maples and the hilltop pagoda compose a nightscape people travel specifically to see.

Tradition dates the temple's founding to 853; it takes its common name from its seventh abbot, Eikan (1033–1111). Its principal image, the 'Mikaeri Amida' (Amida Looking Back), carries a legend: in 1082, while Eikan circled the statue chanting, the Amida figure stepped down and walked with him — and when the startled Eikan stopped, the Buddha looked back over his shoulder and said, 'Eikan, you are slow.' The statue has kept that backward gaze ever since.

  • Hojo Pond's mirror: illuminated maples and the pagoda reflected on the water
  • Gokuraku Bridge: spanning the pond, the spot for reflection photos
  • Tahoto Pagoda: glowing through the maples on the hillside
  • Garyuro corridor: winding along the slope for viewing while walking
Getting there
48 Eikando-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto. In Higashiyama, in the Nanzenji area.
Booking
No reservation needed; buy at the gate. ¥1,000 (junior high school and up).
Crowds
A famously popular foliage spot; nights in peak season are usually busy. Arrive soon after opening or avoid weekends.
Good for
First-time visitors, couples, photographers. Fine with children, but hillside paths are dark at night.
How it differs
Kyoto has dozens of night illuminations; Eikando's reason is water — the mirror reflection of lit maples and pagoda on Hojo Pond. Kitano Tenmangu's draw is topography, viewing maples from above and below its historic embankment; the Kiyomizu and Kodaiji area illuminations offer sweeping views. Choose Eikando for the classic 'mirror foliage' photograph; choose Kitano Tenmangu for something different. Eikando sits in Higashiyama, an easy stop after Nanzenji.
