From 31 October to 6 December 2026, Kitano Tenmangu's Momiji Garden at the historic Midoi earthwork opens specially for autumn, 9:00–16:00 (last entry 15:40). Evening illuminations run from 13 November, sunset to 20:00 (last entry 19:40). Admission: ¥1,500 for junior high and up, ¥700 for elementary students, free for preschoolers.
Before you go
The garden is built on the historic Midoi earthwork: view the maples from above the rampart, then look up at them from below — a three-dimensional landscape no other foliage spot offers. Highlights include a 400-plus-year-old three-pronged maple and an overlook with a view of the National Treasure main hall.
The Midoi earthwork was built in 1591 (Tensho 19) and is tied to Toyotomi Hideyoshi; the official site describes it as a historic structure guarded and handed down for 430 years. Kitano Tenmangu enshrines Sugawara no Michizane and is the head shrine of some 12,000 Tenmangu shrines nationwide.

- Good for
- People who want foliage without the biggest crowds; history buffs interested in Momoyama-period earthworks; families with small children (preschoolers free).
- How it differs
- Most Kyoto foliage spots are about seeing the leaves; here the point is standing on the earthwork to see them — the terrain itself is the exhibit. Compared with packed spots like Eikando and Tofukuji, the rampart trail gives this garden a clear, easy route.
