Heads-up. Outdoor night event on stone paths that can be slippery. Last entry 21:00. Watch your step in crowds; use public transport.

From October 23 to December 5, 2026, UNESCO-listed Nijo Castle hosts a nighttime immersive art exhibition, 18:00–22:00 daily (last entry 21:00), marking the 400th anniversary of the Kan'ei Imperial Visit. Ten spots across the castle grounds feature projection mapping and light installations, with Japanese-English audio guides. Tickets: 2,000 yen Mon–Thu, 2,400 yen Fri–Sun/holidays (high school and up); elementary and junior-high students free. Open daily throughout, rain or shine.

Before you go

A nighttime art exhibition by creative company NAKED at Nijo Castle: after dark, the gates, palace halls, and gardens are transformed by projections and lighting — a Nijo Castle you never see by day. The 2026 edition marks 400 years since the Kan'ei Imperial Visit of 1626, when Tokugawa Hidetada and Iemitsu hosted Emperor Go-Mizunoo for five days; the whole exhibition unfolds around that history and the 'Japanese aesthetics' of the era, with bilingual audio guides to follow the story.

In September 1626, Retired Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada and third Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu welcomed Emperor Go-Mizunoo to Nijo Castle with five days of lavish hospitality — one of the Edo period's grandest cultural events. The stability that followed blossomed into Kan'ei culture. The exhibition centers on Tokugawa Kazuko (Tōfukumon'in) — Hidetada's daughter, who entered the imperial court at 19 and lived through the visit before becoming a driving force of Kan'ei culture. Produced by NAKED with special cooperation from Tokugawa Iehiro, 19th head of the Tokugawa clan.

  • Karamon Gate (Important Cultural Property): projection themed on blossoming culture, on a gate that is itself a national treasure
  • Ninomaru Garden (Special Place of Scenic Beauty): illuminated strolling garden, reflections on the pond are the photo spot
  • 'Echoes in the Margins' before the Ninomaru Palace Grand Hall: architecture meeting light, the scene that sets it apart from temple light-ups
  • 'Kazuko's Night Tea Gathering' at the kitchen courtyard: the immersive climax of the 400-year narrative
Getting there
Right at Tozai subway line 'Nijojo-mae' station (about 1 minute). From Kyoto Station: Karasuma subway line to Karasuma-Oike, transfer to the Tozai line; or city buses 9/50 to 'Nijojo-mae'. About 17 minutes on foot from JR Nijo Station. Parking lots 1 and 3 open until 22:15.
Booking
Buy online in advance: 2,000 yen Mon–Thu, 2,400 yen Fri–Sun/holidays (high school and up); elementary and junior-high students free, no ticket needed. Early-bird discount (400 yen off) until Oct 22. Students and Kyoto residents get 500 yen cash back after entry with ID. Set tickets with Kyoto Station matcha (2,600 yen) and Kyoto Tower (2,500 yen) available.
Crowds
A popular illumination spanning maple season — weekends get busy, and the official page warns entry may be limited when crowded. For thinner crowds pick Mon–Thu (early-bird also applies). Last entry 21:00, but admission can close earlier if lines are long; arrive by 19:00.
Good for
First-time Kyoto visitors wanting night views, younger travelers into art installations and projection mapping, families (students free). History buffs get more from the bilingual audio guide.
How it differs
Kyoto has dozens of nighttime illuminations, but Nijo Castle is one of the few in a castle rather than a temple or shrine — you're looking at fortifications, gardens, and moats, not temple halls. NAKED's other Kyoto production at Higashi Honganji and Shosei-en leans toward garden fantasy; here the draw is 400 years of history narrated through the Karamon Gate (Important Cultural Property), Ninomaru Palace, and Ninomaru Garden (Special Place of Scenic Beauty) reimagined by projection. Where Kiyomizu or Kodaiji light-ups are 'maples plus night views,' Nijo is 'history plus art installations' — pick it for something different. Families note elementary and junior-high students enter free, making it the best-value nighttime outing with kids.
