Special Opening of the First Floor of the Five-storied Pagoda
Before you go
To-ji's pagoda is a National Treasure, about 55 m tall — officially described as the tallest wooden structure in Japan. Its first-floor interior is normally off-limits; this limited opening lets visitors step inside during the day to see the polychrome esoteric-Buddhist space and the demon figures at the corners.
- Getting there
- About 10 minutes on foot from Kintetsu Toji Station, or 15 minutes from JR Kyoto Station's Hachijo exit. Address: 1 Kujo-cho, Minami-ku, Kyoto.
- Booking
- No reservation needed; buy on the day. Pagoda first floor + Kondo/Kodo: adults ¥1,200, high-school students ¥700, junior-high and younger ¥500 (individual). From 26 November a combined ticket is also available (individual ¥2,000 / ¥800). Last entry 16:30 — don't cut it close.
- Crowds
- Doors open at 8:00 — go early for fewer people.
- Good for
- Anyone interested in Japanese architecture or Buddhist art; no Japanese needed, it's all visual. The interior is dim and cramped, which may not suit wheelchair users or those with limited mobility — check the official site for details.
- How it differs
- Unlike the Kodo hall's 'three-dimensional mandala', which can be circumambulated 360° as part of the regular autumn viewing, the pagoda interior opens only during limited periods in spring and autumn. The evening autumn illumination (18:00–21:30, separate ¥1,000 adult ticket) covers only the Kondo and Kodo halls — a different event from the daytime tower opening.
Founded in 883 (Gangyo 7), the pagoda has burned and been rebuilt several times; the current one is the fifth, rebuilt by Tokugawa Iemitsu in the Edo period. The Homotsukan treasure hall is concurrently showing 'The Art and History of To-ji's Five-storied Pagoda: 1,200 Years of Rise and Fall' (20 Sep–25 Nov) — worth pairing with the tower visit.
Do I need a reservation?
No — tickets are sold on the day.
Can I go inside the tower in the evening?
No. The special opening runs 8:00–17:00 in the daytime; the evening autumn illumination covers only the Kondo and Kodo halls and is a separate event.
Can I take photos inside?
Follow the on-site signage and staff instructions.
