Shourinin

勝林院

Shourinin is a Tendai temple in Ohara, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, and one of the temples of Gyozan Ohara-dera. Its official site records that Jakugen founded it in 1013 as a nembutsu training hall using shomyo chanting. About ninety years later Ryonin completed the Ohara school of Tendai shomyo, and the area became a centre for its study and transmission. The present main hall was rebuilt in 1778, built entirely of zelkova wood with a shingled roof. Its principal image, a seated Amida Nyorai, is known as the Amida of Proof after the Ohara Debate. The temple is about a ten-minute walk from Ohara bus stop.

Shorin-in: all six pages listed in the official site's sitemap were read (top page, cultural-property exhibition, Shorin-in lectures, main-hall restoration, temple newsletter and access); none of the four categories — the bell itself (age, size, weight, history), how it is rung, how many strikes and when, or anything unique to this temple — mentions a bell or a New Year's Eve bell at all. ↗
