Demachi Masugata Shotengai (Tamako Market anime pilgrimage)

出町桝形商店街(「たまこまーけっと」聖地)

Demachi Masugata Shotengai is a pure walking pilgrimage spot for fans of the anime Tamako Market, which was set in this very shopping street. The covered arcade itself is the attraction, with English guide articles available online, and no Japanese is needed to enjoy the stroll. A must for Kyoto Animation fans, and it pairs well with the Demachiza cinema in the same neighborhood.

Keibunsha Ichijoji

恵文社一乗寺店

Keibunsha in Ichijoji is a legendary independent bookshop curating titles around architecture, art, thought, and subculture, with almost no bestsellers on the shelves. Even without Japanese, visitors can enjoy the beautifully designed space itself — it was Japan's only entry in the Guardian's 2010 list of the world's ten most beautiful bookshops. The deeper joy of browsing the selection does require Japanese. Foreign visitors have noticeably increased in recent years.

Demachiza (indie cinema)

出町座

Demachiza is an independent cinema in the Demachiyanagi neighborhood whose official site is Japanese only. Japanese films screen without English subtitles, though foreign films carry Japanese subtitles, which English-speaking viewers can follow. With four or more screenings daily and frequent director Q&As and talk events, it is a hub for Kyoto's film community. Non-Japanese speakers should pick foreign titles. The lobby's film posters and flyers are a attraction in themselves for cinema lovers.
