Kamigamo Jinja Gyokei, Oharae and Joyasai 2026
Filed underNew Year's Eve
Kamigamo Jinja's three New Year's Eve rites all fall on December 31, 2026: the Gyokei no Gi from 4 p.m. at Hashidono, where the chief priest and priests purify themselves; the Oharae-shiki that follows, in which the chief priest recites the Nakatomi purification prayer and hitogata bearing the latter half-year's sins of parishioners and worshippers are floated into the Nara no Ogawa, so the new year can be met with a cleansed body; and the Joyasai that follows in the main hall, giving thanks for the year's blessings and praying that the coming year is also good. Festivals marked as open to attendance cost hatsuhoryo of ¥3,000; those wishing to attend should apply at the shrine office 15 minutes before the rite begins and dress properly. Inquiries on 075-781-0011 (8:30–17:00).
